SHOOTIN', HUNTIN', AND RELOADIN'

Here it is almost time for the September/October Newsletter, and I'm just now finishing July/August!  As a result, this will be rather abbreviated as I just hit a couple of high spots.

July and August were pretty much doing the same things over and over, but not in the vein of Einsteins' 'Definition of Insanity'.  That is, expecting a different result each time.  Most of the things we did resulted in the same ol', same ol' that we expected of each effort.

Our golf occurred regularly, Ann on Tuesday and Wednesday at Trailhead in Liberty Lake and me on Tuesdays at The Links in Post Falls, ID.  Scores:  About the same as usual; nothing to write home about.

We both spent considerable time at the Elks Lodge, Ann assisting with projects and events needing volunteers and me helping the Office Staff with such items as the monthly Newsletter.   We are all learning the ins and outs of Mailchimp, our preferred method of distributing our Newsletters and communicating with our members.  As I reported earlier, the duties of Board Chairman, for which I 'Dumbassedly' volunteered.  (Yeah, I know that ain't a real word, but it should be)
These duties require extra time with meetings and the recurring crises that seem to happen within the workings of any fraternal organization.

We both spent considerable time trying to make progress on the cleanup of the aftermath of the logging operation here on the ranch.  Putting it mildly, the loggers left things in a real mess with respect to properly piling and burning the slash left from the logging operation.  They came back and worked one day last winter re-piling some slash with an excavator and essentially made the problems worse by getting so much dirt in the piles that they'll never burn.

The loggers were supposed to return to finish the job, but they are reportedly now out of business and so we don't expect to see them again.  We are still exploring our options with respect to redress but proceeding as though we'll probably end up doing the job ourselves.

As I reported last time, part of the effort toward self help on the clean-up included the purchase of a new John Deere mini excavator to remove some of the stumps and re-stack the slash piles, sans dirt, to enable us to burn them this fall and winter.

Last newsletter pictures showed the excavator before the bucket had ever hit dirt.  These that follow at least show that some of the paint has worn off the bucket!

The arrows identify the two stumps southwest of the house that comprised this project.  The one on the left is a chainsaw carving of a bear's head, supposedly.

The two stumps were only about 18 inches in diameter but as you can see one needs to move a lot of dirt to get the root systems loose.

Back on the rig getting ready to swing around, put the stumps in the bottom of the hole, and start backfilling.

Starting the backfill.

It may look like I'm working, but I'm really just having fun!

Next time I'll try to remember to show you what this area looks like now.

This month's hillbilly wisdom is a bit of advice from an unknown source:

A wise man once said; "Be careful who you let on your ship, because some people will sink the whole ship just because they can't be the Captain!"

As of this late writing, we have already taken some time off for a vacation and some other activities, which I'll report on soon.

Well, it's time to shut down here, so. . . . .
'Til next time, Keep 'em shootin' straight, shoot 'em often, and above all, BE SAFE!!!
